If your tongue finds a small crater in the roof of your mouth, it may be a sign of an ominous sounding but painless and usually not serious condition called NECROTIZING SIALOMETAPLASIA. These lesions are usually evidence of some injury to the inside of your mouth and sometimes heal on their own in a few months. Unfortunately some of these lesions do turn out to be cancerous.
Recurrent mouth sores or canker can be an early warning sign of two serious gastrointestinal conditions, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. They can also be early warning signs of the autoimmune disorder, Lupus.
