When someone tells you your breath smells sweet, they may not just be sweet talking to you rather they may, in fact, be saving your life. Sweet or fruity breath or breath that has a sweet chemical or acetone (like nail polish remover) smell, can be a serious warning sign that you have diabetes and that your blood sugar is dangerously out of control. Medically known as Diabetic Acidosis or Diabetic ketoacidosis, this is a medical emergency. If your blood sugar is not promptly regulated, coma and death may follow.
When their blood sugar is out of control, diabetics may have a distinctive breath odor that smells like alcohol. Because low blood sugar can cause diabetics to stagger, they may be mistaken for being drunk and not receive the immediate help they need.
