Hearing Your Heartbeat

If you occasionally hear what sounds like your heart beating, you may be right. Many of us notice this sign when we lie down in bed with our ear on the pillow. In this case, it is a normal, albeit annoying, sign that can interfere with your hearing and sleep, not to mention your peace of mind. But some people experience a similar sensation, described as a throbbing sound only in one ear, even when they are not lying down. Called PULSATILE  TINNITUS (objective tinnitus, because the sound is audible during a physical examination), it can be a warning sign of a vascular disorder, such as a heart murmur, hypertension, or hardening of the blood vessels in your heart or neck.

If you hear a throbbing sound or heartbeat in one ear and have a severe headache, call your doctor or go to the emergecy room. You may be experiencing signs of an impending stroke.
