Spotted Teeth

Are your teeth more speckled than evenly colored? If so, it may be a sign of ENAMEL FLUOROSIS, an overexposure to fluoride from fluorinated drinking water, toothpaste, and oral rinses. In mild cases, the spots are small, whitish, and opaque. As the problem gets worse, the spots become brown and the teeth look mottled. While this condition often starts during childhood when developing teeth are explosed to too much fluoride, the brown stains and pitting are not usually spotted until much later. Although spotted teeth are cosmetically unappealing, they usually are a benign sign. However, these spots can be the earliest warning sign of fluoride poisoning, which can be life threatening.

Overindulging is not the only thing wine tasters have to worry about. Another common occupational hazard is the loss of the surface of their teeth. Over time, bathing the teeth in the acid containing wine erodes tooth enamel.
