Like the color of our hair, the color of our eyes is determined by our genes. Most people have black or brown eyes. By comparison, blue eyes are relatively rare and most often found in people of Northern European descent. Finland had the highest concentration of people with blue eyes, fully 90% of its population. Green eyes are even rarer, they tend to be found among people of Celtic, Germanic, and Slavic descent, with Hungary taking the lead. And green eyes are so common among the Pashtuns that these Afghans and Pakistanis are called Hare Ankheim Vaale, "the green eyed people."
Blue-eyed people are more likely than dark-eyed people to suffer eye damage from the sun. As a result, they tend to be at greater risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration, a progressive eye disease that is one of the leading causes of blindness. No matter what the color of your eyes, wearing dark glasses can help protect eyes from these and other eye disorders.
