Groovy Tongue

A grooved or fissured tongue may not sound gross until you hear the medical term for it: SCROTAL TONGUE. Also known as lingual tongue, scrotal tongue is quite common. Up to 5% of people in the U.S. and over 20% of people worldwide have a furrowed tongue. Despite the name, it is only slightly more common in men than in women. Scrotal tongue tends to increase in frequency and severity with age and is usually inherited.

As nasty as it sounds, scrotal tongue is usually a benign sign unless bacteria fill in the grooves and cause halitosis (bad breath). It can also be a sign of the rare condition Miescher-Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome, which causes swelling of the lips.
